What is the RoadXML?

It’s an XML file format that contains several layers of data and is designed to answer the needs of many driving simulators applications:
- Traffic simulation
- Scenario control
- Car, Truck and Motorbike dynamics models
- Platform control model
- Sound control
- 3D road networks generation

How is defined a network in RoadXML© ?

A road network in the RoadXML© file format is made of a patchwork of Sub-Network.

Each Sub-Network is a collection of Tracks linked by Intersections.

Each of these Intersections and Tracks are then enhanced with different layers of data :
- The road profile is added on the track to define the pavement surface.
- Road Signs and other local cognitive elements are attached to the track.
- Traffic and 3D description is carried by the road profiles.

What is the XSD file extension?

the RoadXML© is based on XML format.

here is an extract of the wikipedia XML page
XML Schema, published as a W3C recommendation in May 2001, is one of several XML schema languages. It was the first separate schema language for XML to achieve Recommendation status by the W3C. Because of confusion between XML Schema as a specific W3C specification, and the use of the same term to describe schema languages in general, some parts of the user community referred to this language as WXS, an initialism for W3C XML Schema, while others referred to it as XSD, an initialism for XML Schema Document—a document written in the XML Schema language, typically containing the "xsd" XML namespace prefix and stored with the ".xsd" filename extension. In the draft of the next version, 1.1, the W3C has chosen to adopt XSD as the preferred name, and that is the name used in this article.

Like all XML schema languages, XSD can be used to express a set of rules to which an XML document must conform in order to be considered 'valid' according to that schema. However, unlike most other schema languages, XSD was also designed with the intent that determination of a document's validity would produce a collection of information adhering to specific data types. Such a post-validation infoset can be useful in the development of XML document processing software, but the schema language's dependence on specific data types has provoked criticism.

RoadXML© file format also provide user data mechanism to allow application to add extra information into the format.

Is there any opensource project using the RoadXML© format ?

sure. you can find one here.
it is a parser to be able to read and write a RoadXML© network.
feel free to download it.
